WordPress supports various types of media, including images, audio, video, documents, galleries, and embeds from other websites. You can upload, embed, and manage these media types directly within the WordPress platform. For more information on the Media library and how to add media, see Media library screen in WordPress documentation.
Image Format
Image size matters when it comes to WordPress. If an image is too small or too compressed, it can look blurry or pixelated. If images are too large or not compressed enough, they slow down the load time for your site. For general information about image formats and sizes, see Image size and quality in WordPress documentation.
Using the right aspect ratios also matters for consistent layouts. Aspect ratio is the width of an image compared to the height. A square is 1:1 whereas others can be more vertical or horizontal. See Style Guide > Images on the UCLA Design System website for examples.
Recommended Sizes
Banners & Full Width Images
The default page width is 1176px. That means that all the content on your site will display across 1176 pixels of the monitor it’s being viewed on. Therefore, if you are using a banner or an image block in a full-width column, an appropriate width for your image would be at least 1176px. For images that go across the full-width, a 16:9 or similar horizontal ratio where the width is just under or over double the height is recommended.
Cards
Images for cards use a 3:2 image ratio. The recommended size is 1152px x 768px for clarity on mobile retina screens.
Featured Images
A featured image is used in various places, sometimes as a thumbnail, sometimes with a card, and sometimes at the top of a page. Keep that in mind when choosing the image size. Whatever you choose, a consistent size is best when displayed together.
